Cowboy Dances coming for the final event of the 2006 Concert Series!
Pack a picnic supper and come to Picnic Island at Fort Snelling State Park by 6:30 p.m.
on Thursday, September 7 for a free performance of traditional Cowboy Dances by Dakota
Grand Squares. Traditional dances crossed the ocean from England and France in the
1600s. With the westward expansion of Euro-American settlers, these "cowboy
dances" changed to the dances we know today as Square Dances. Learn a
"cowboy dance" or two of your own during this performance with caller
Dan Sahlstrom. Audience participation is invited in this beautiful setting by
the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. Square dance attire is optional!

Upper Bluff named Most Endangered
On May 10, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named
the Upper Post region of Fort Snelling, also known as the Upper Bluff,
as one of the eleven most critically endangered historic sites in the
country. This 141 acre site was developed starting in the 1870s,
and continued in operation until after World War II, but the buildings
have been largely abandoned in recent decades.
The photos at right show the exterior and the front entry of
Building 151, the former Bachelor Officers' Quarters. This building,
which is typical of those on the site, has damage to the roof,
is losing its interior plaster and paint, and had lost much of the
glass in its windows before they were boarded up. Some of the other
buildings have suffered interior structural damage as well.
We will have more details later.
