July 3

7 p.m.: Minnesota Tree Identification
Join the naturalist for a hike on the park's trails and learn how to identify the many different species of trees native to the area.

July 4

9 a.m.: Fitness and Phenology -Morning Along Snelling Lake
Join the Naturalist on this morning walk around Snelling Lake. The beach isn't the only area of interest for our park visitors by the lake. This is a great chance to walk around the 2.5 mile trail and see who else is using the lake. We'll be starting at the beach and working our way around the lake.

2 p.m.: Junior Park Naturalist - Popcan Fishing Rig
People have been fishing thousands of years. Learn what fish need to survive and how to identify them, and then make your own fishing rig and learn to cast. Please bring a pop can with the tab attached. Look for the Naturalist tent in the beach area.

7 p.m.: Geocaching 101
Discover the fascinating challenge of geocaching and how you can use it to explore Minnesota State Parks' History Challenge and hidden treasures. You will receive hands - on training that will help you participate in the "Geocaching History Challenge." A limited number of GPS units will be available.

July 5

10 a.m.: Historic Buildings Tour
The historic buildings along Highway 5 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and have quite a history to tell. Learn how these buildings were used throughout the history of our state and nation.

2 p.m.: Minnesota Tree identification
Join the naturalist for a hike on the park's trails and learn how to identify the many different species of trees native to the area.

4 p.m.: Minnesota Beginnings
This area we now call Fort Snelling State Park has been a gathering place for thousands of years. Wooly Mammoths, Pigs Eye Parrant, Henry Hastings Sibley, Lt. Zebulon Pike, Chief Little Crow and many others have walked on this area. Visit the places where Minnesota history took place during this one-mile easy walk.

7 p.m.: Fort Snelling Rocks and Rolls
Water, sand, and time have created and shaped the rocks and valleys surrounding Fort Snelling State Park. Learn how these forces acted together to give us our present day landscape that we will explore during this talk and bike ride. Bring your own bike, meet at the visitor center.

July 6

10 a.m.: Buffalo Bird Woman's Garden
This garden is based on the Indian gardens that were grown in the upper Midwest during the mid and late 1800's. Learn about the crops planted and the agricultural styles used by the Hidatsa-Mandan Indians during this participation program.

2 p.m.: Interpretive Bike Tour
Great waterfalls, Dakota villages, military camps and old railroads are all waiting to be rediscovered and seen through your minds eye. This ride will be around 9 miles with stops along the way. This program is free, but reservations required 612-725-2724. Meet at the park visitor center.

4 p.m.: Geocaching 101

July 7

7 p.m.: Discover the Floodplain Forest
Each year plants and animals that live in a river flood forest are subjected to periods of flood and drought. Walk and discover how the plants and animals that live in a flood plain forest are uniquely adapted for survival in this type of wetland.

July 8

6:30 p.m.: Wetland Treasures: Calcareous Fens
Wetlands are much more than cattails, mosquitoes and standing water. Calcareous Fens get their name from the calcium dissolved in the upwelling groundwater that feeds them. Explore with the naturalist this rare habitat that once stretched for miles along the Minnesota River. Reservations required. 612-725-2724.
